  • Celebrating our TECS team Going the Extra Mile

We are delighted to be celebrating a commendation received for Abigail Johnson, one of our Buckinghamshire TECS (technology enabled care services) team from the Head of Operations of a local private ambulance firm.

Abigail was recently attending an appointment to fit a personal alarm for a lady in her 50's. When she arrived at the appointment she realised that the lady was unresponsive and seriously ill. Abi called 999 and was waiting outside when the ambulance arrived.

Initially the lady was stable but during the transfer to the ambulance she went into cardiac arrest. Abi followed the crew to the ambulance as they started to work on reviving the lady. Abi was asked if she was able and willing to help, initally she assisted with CPR and subsequently helped with the patients airway under instruction.

The patient was successfully resuscitated on the way to ITU and is now doing well.

The Head of Operations said in her commendation:

"I'd can say in all honesty that without Abi's help the outcome would have been a lot different and she definitely helped save this woman's life that day. Can you please pass on my sincere gratitude to Abi. She is an asset to your company"

Abigails great work has earned her a GEM award. GEM - Going the Extra Mile awards is our internal recognition scheme. They are awarded to staff members who have been nominated by their colleagues, customers or the business as a whole. Abigail was one of four winners from a large number of nominations.

    Well Done Abigail!

  • Great work by one of our wheelchair technicians

A big thank you to one of our wheelchair technicians in Northern Ireland.

Charlie Mcnamee, one of our wheelchair technicians in Northern Ireland, received a thank you for saving the life of one of his wheelchair clients.

During a scheduled appointment to carry out repairs on a client's wheelchair, the client experienced a seizure and become unresponsive. Charlie immediately called the ambulance service and waited with the client until medical help arrived. The client was transferred straight away to hospital.

By chance a few days later, Charlie was visiting the hospital to carry out a routine wheelchair check and the client he had helped recognised Charlie's voice. She and her family couldn't thank him enough. It transpired she had experienced a stroke. No-one was due to visit her until much later in the day, so Charlie's quick actions had potentially saved her life.

    Charlie said that

“The clients I see often don't see anyone else all day so it's nice to have a chat whilst I'm working. This client suddenly stopped talking and I knew something was seriously wrong. I'm so pleased I was there and able to help, it was great to see her doing so well in hospital and receive thanks from her family”.

    WELL DONE CHARLIE

  • Supporting our local community in Kent

Kind-hearted NRS Healthcare employees in Kent took time out of their busy schedules to carry out charitable work at a volunteer centre that supports organisations within the community.

Tom Lindsey, a Team Leader, Rick Craft, Ceiling and Track Hoist Lead, and Karen Smith, a Customer Service Advisor, all based at the NRS depot in Aylesford, spent a day at the Volunteer Centre Ashford, where they carried out maintenance and redecoration work to brighten up the building which has been refurbished over the past couple of years.

Tom and Rick were able to make the centre feel a bit more like home, by filling in holes in walls, hanging signs and pictures, whilst Karen was able to inject some colour by painting a Tardis door for the centre's Men's in Sheds group.

Tom, who has been working at NRS for one year, said:

"Volunteering has always been a passion of mine due to its rewarding nature. There is nothing better than helping people and seeing the reward that it provides in the community. I felt that the work we completed, at Ashford Volunteer Centre, made a difference for them. It was clear to see the gratitude from the staff. We painted a door in the cellar to look like the Tardis from Doctor Who, which was a great experience. We also hung signs on all the doors, allowing all of the staff and visitors to be able to easily identify rooms. This is a small task, but it will have a positive impact on all that are involved with the team there. I feel that this was a great use of our time; at NRS Healthcare we spend all week helping people with mobility aids, and it was great to carry this work on into the wider community.”.

Liz McLaren from the volunteer centre, said:

“I just wanted to say a big thank you for sending your team over. “We are absolutely delighted with what they have done for us and are incredibly grateful for their time. They have made such a difference.”.

Working closely with local authorities and the NHS, NRS Healthcare supports people of all ages within the community to live full, active and independent lives for as long as possible. In addition to staff carrying out their day-to-day roles, they are also working to support members of the community through other means such as volunteering and fundraising events.
